Braille is Beautiful in Spanish

By Joyce Wales, President, Parents of Blind Children Chapter

The Parents of Blind Children chapter has been doing Braille is Beautiful workshops this past year under the sponsorship of the NFBC and the PacifiCare Foundation. In April we decided to expand our focus and held a workshop for Spanish-speaking parents at the Frances Blend School in Los Angeles.

The workshop was well attended, and the parents were receptive and excited to learn a skill that will only benefit them and their ability to more effectively encourage and teach their children. Caroline Rounds, V.I. teacher and first vice president of the NFBC, taught the workshop, and she was more than able to encourage participation and make the whole day a fun activity for everyone who attended. Lunch was provided, and parents were able to interact and share experiences during that valuable time.

By the end of the day each parent was able to use a slate and stylus to write simple words or a short sentence.

I'd like to thank our interpreters who, with their expertise, helped make the workshop a success.
