ICAN is a 2009 incorporated not-for-profit public membership movement made up of individuals and groups that have freely accepted the personal responsibility to take action, in solidarity with others, to create a better world for ALL
Our mission is threefold:
We envision being a catalyst to a burgeoning “peoples” movement that works with great resolve, passion and solidarity to steer our world away from an ominous and potentially tragic fate. We see ourselves leading our fellow man to a new world defined by peace, respect for nature, simplified prosperity, and humanitarianism. We are the non-violent foot soldiers that by sheer numbers and goodwill become a driving force in helping to establish economic, ecological, and social justice and sustainability for our communities, our country, and our planet.
ALL of our funding comes from individuals. As a result, we are NOT beholden to any special interests, and are therefore one of the few truly diverse grassroots movement organizations that can be fully committed to taking independent actions on behalf of, by, and for the people’s interest.
We are NOT a single issue organization or movement. Thus, our inherent framework and very sustenance encourages and requires collaboration, consensus, solidarity, and cooperation from a diverse yet like-minded set of groups and individuals. As such, our structure lends itself to mass mobilization for direct action campaigns, and it is now unequivocally clear that such activity is required to force change in the current status quo arrangements, maintained by elite powers, if we are to avoid long-term economic and ecological catastrophe.
Our movement derives its impetus and cohesion through a commitment to learn about, educate our communities about, and take action to defuse and transform a uniquely pernicious and inflammatory relationship among “eight deadly tentacles” (human institutions and planetary risks) that are threatening civilization. We believe our predicament as a society is so potentially perilous that to realize our vision ALL eight tentacles must be addressed quickly, aggressively, repeatedly, and in solidarity by thousands of groups and millions of people in the coming years and decades.
Our organizational and communication structure encourages regular communication by ALL members, and provides incentives for a defined base level of activity for ALL members of our network. We make every effort to reduce the percentage of our membership that is made up of solely “dues-paying members”. Funding is indeed a precious resource, but time and commitment are invaluable to accomplish our objectives.
